These photo series deals with death from the artist’s Catholic perspective or, rather, ex-Catholic perspective; on a first level, its leitmotif consists in a sharp critique of religious consumerism; thus, to religion perceived as a mere business, which is made more than obvious in Guatemala when it comes to celebrations such as the Holy Week.

A second topic being addressed with the series’ images is the problem of how Catholicism has imposed, throughout history -and keeps doing so, although in subtler ways- a culture of death, which celebrates the passion and suffering of the Christ rather than his resurrection. This, in the end, becomes a widely accepted policy that positions suffering as a form of morbid jubilee and uses mourning as a means of inflicting “sinner’s guilt”, which, in turn, is an undeniable way of spiritual control and, therefore, of social and cultural control. This photographs incorporates traditional Catholic iconography interweaves with sensuality, mourning and fetichism, which is the very personal way in which the artist perceives Guatemala Holy Week.


Lives and works in Guatemala.

He is a self-taught artist who began his career in Guatemala City as a photojournalist and progressively found himself working with portraiture and urban photography. His photographs combine kitsch, pop, religion, and eroticism. On May 2015 he won 1st. place in Arte en Mayo, Guatemala. He was selected for the Trasatlantic Discovery Program of PhotoEspaña.
